Morphopaedics

2025

Self Directed Major Project

Morphopaedics is a modern re-imagining of the traditional orthopaedic cast, designed to improve patient recovery, reduce complications, and alleviate pressure on overstretched healthcare systems. It replaces heavy, non-breathable plaster and fibreglass casts with a lightweight, radiolucent, and fully breathable structure that prioritises hygiene, comfort, and adaptability.

Made from durable, biocompatible Nylon 6/6 GF, Morphopaedics allows X-rays to pass through without removal, reducing imaging disruptions and eliminating the need for unnecessary follow-up appointments. Its open lattice design improves ventilation and skin health, while its micro-adjustable fasteners adapts to swelling and anatomical variation, something traditional casts cannot do.

The cast is water-resistant, enabling patients to shower freely, and it can be applied or removed without specialist tools or saws, making it safer and more efficient for clinical staff. Morphopaedics also supports early-stage physiotherapy, with technology such as TENS and LIPUS, helping patients retain strength and improve mobility faster, reducing overall recovery times.

By streamlining application, improving patient comfort, and lowering long-term costs, Morphopaedics not only enhances clinical care but also offers a sustainable, scalable solution that fits seamlessly into existing NHS workflows. It’s more than a cast—it’s a step toward smarter, human-centred fracture treatment.
